| ISO Standards
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest Organisation set up in 1947 at Geneva, Switzerland,  with the aim to evolve Standards for products & services. As on date, it has a membership of 162 Standard making bodies of respective countries . Hence India is represented by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). ISO is a totally non governmental  voluntary organization with a Secretariat that coordinates all ISO Standards related activities with members representing their countries.

ISO as an organization is not at all concerned with Certification. It only prepares and issues Standards which run into few thousands, covering almost all the segments of Manufacturing & services. The latest in the Standards family is ISO 50001 (Energy Management System).

The certification as per the Standards laid down is being done by different Certifying bodies spread all over the world. These bodies are authorized to issue certificates as per the norms laid down by IAF (International Accreditation Forum). The most popular standards adopted & implemented by organizations are ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001:2015 (Environment Management   System), OH&SMS 45001:2018 & ISO 22000:2018 (FSMS)

It applies to the processes that create and control the products and services an organization renders . ISO 14001 is a global standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). The objective of the ISO 14001 standard is to give the top management of any organization a framework for managing environmental impacts.Because of its generic nature and universal acceptance, ISO 14001 has the potential to affect the environmental management practices of virtually every manufacturing company in the globe — its impact even extends beyond the industrial scenario. Any company whose products, services or day-to-day activities have an impact on the environment needs to be aware of ISO 14001.
Like ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001 is a product of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 14001 is the world’s first generic, internationally recognized standard for environmental management. Of the group of ISO 14000 standards, ISO 14001 is the actual standard to which companies get registered. Experts are forecasting that the impacts of this dynamic standard will transcend the vast popularity of the world-renowned ISO 9000 quality standard. ISO 14001 measures the conformance of an organization’s EMS to the specified requirements.
Through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), ISO 14001 is expected to become a prerequisite for doing business worldwide. Experts say it is the market forces which will drive acceptance of the new global environmental standards.Advantages of ISO 14001 RegistrationsISO 14001 registrations can improve your organization’s bottom line through improved environmental performance. A properly designed environmental management system (EMS) is a tool which enables an organization to achieve and systematically control its level of environmental performance. The EMS triggers procedural and technological changes that can reduce lower down production costs. The requirement for continuous improvement in environmental impacts drives more productive usage of all inputs, including raw materials, energy and labour. Reducing pollution means improved productivity and more efficient use of resources.
Direct benefits derived from implementing an effective EMS include:

Material savings through more complete product input processing, substitution, and recycling of by-products and wasteReduced energy consumptionReduced material storage costsReduced costs for emissions, discharges, waste handling, transport and disposalIncreased process yieldsReduced insurance ratesReduced customer auditsReduced environmental liabilityReduced enforcement finesEMS tracking measurable via consistent plan-do-check-review methods Intangible EMS benefits include:
